There was a silence. "Show me a flower," said the

beAt.

Kirk looked up at it, bemused, then said,

"Certainly." He got up, looked around the

clearing. It was not all the fine turf he had been

examining

earlier; there was some low shrubby growth dotted about

it here and there, and bright spots of color showed among

the branches. "Shall I bring one

over for you?" he said to the beAt.

"No need," said the creature. "Show me one."

Kirk got up and started walking over to the

shrubbery. That was when he got another surprise,

because the beAt went with him. It didn't move. But

at the same time, it was next to him with every step he

took, without disturbing a single leaf of t hat springy

bluegreen ground cover, or so much as a

crumb of dirt. It was a very impressive trick,

and Kirk wondered how in the world it did it.

Then again, they said the comAt's physicality was

"occasional." Is it

voluntary, I wonder? Do they turn it on and

off" at will? And how does it affect their

metabolism? He smiled to himself again. Now 1

understand why it made Bones so crazy when I called

him back up to the ship. I've got to find a way

to make it up to him later.

"Here," he said, pausing and kneeling down. The

bright bits of red in the bushes turned out to be

berries; but the turf had more than one kind of

plant in it, and Kirk reached down to touch a

small broadleaved plant, like a miniature

primrose, with delicate white orchid-like

petals. "That's what we would normally call a

flower. I'm not sure it's strictly analogous
